ST. PAUL – It has been five years since St. Paul Minor Hockey hosted the last U18 Female Tier 1 provincial championship in the Town of St. Paul.

From March 21 to 24, the community will be the hub for the division’s provincial tournament, set to take place at the Clancy Richard Arena.

“We’ve had a really good run of hockey these last couple of years,” says Deena Machney, host chair for the tournament. “This year, these girls have worked really hard, and we have [six] graduating players.”

So, those involved with the team decided to put a bid in to host provincials – which was awarded by Hockey Alberta.

“We’re working on fundraising, right now,” she said, and preparations made so far includes fundraising, organizing banquet details, and setting up schedules. The complete list of teams that will be in attendance is still being finalized.

As of Feb. 26, only three of the six teams attending had been finalized.

Machney says volunteers will be needed in a variety of areas, such as helping with a raffle table, working the merchandise table, and doing other technical jobs such as working the penalty box.

Machney is excited for the upcoming tournament, and encourages the community to support the team, take time to watch some hockey and have fun.

“It’s an exciting weekend and it’s always fun hockey to watch.”

The tournament will begin at noon on March 21 and will wrap up on Sunday evening.
