St. Paul Storm softball team wins U19 D-level provincial championship

A St. Paul Storm U19 softball team won the U19 D-level provincial championship held in St. Paul from July 18 to 20, after defeating the Elkford Thunder from British Columbia.

ST. PAUL – The hosting St. Paul Storm U19 softball team won U19 D-level provincial championship held in St. Paul from July 18 to 20, after defeating the Elkford Thunder from British Columbia.

Ron Wirsta, head coach of the team, said he is proud of the team for winning the championship. It was not an easy win, he said. At one point, the St. Paul Storm was falling behind during the final game against the Thunder, but they came back to win it.

"They played their hearts out," said Wirsta. Many of the athletes of the team are also aging out, playing at the U19 level, and while Wirsta said he may not know what the future holds for them, he is confident they will do well.

"It was good character building," for the athletes to play the sport, he said. "They've definitely went out on a high and I'm looking forward to seeing what their future becomes."

He also thanked the community for coming out to support and cheer on the team.
