St. Paul youth participate in nationwide Lemonade Day

On June 14, youth in St. Paul participated in Lemonade Day to learn and gain actual experience in what would be like to run a business.

ST. PAUL – On June 14, young people in St. Paul participated in Lemonade Day, learning and gaining experience running a small business.

Lukas Cox of Lukas's Lemony Lemoncraft stand says he participated because he wanted to learn how to make money, but also help raise funding for the St. Paul Veterinary Clinic.

Asked what the biggest thing he learned was, Lukas says, "Making money is hard work," but he says he had a lot of fun during the day. He then thanked all his customers and everyone who made extra donations.

Roger Cox, Lukas' father, says Lukas started out very shy, "But by the end of it, I didn't need to be with him."

"He was helping customers on his own [and] I'm very proud of my son for the work he's done today," says Roger.

Roger believes learning about how to make and manage money is an important skill-set for children to gain. It is also important for kids to learn about the value of giving back, he adds.

Daniel Reid, another parent whose children participated with the national initiative, says he's also proud of what his children accomplished.

It is important for children to understand how commerce works, says Reid. "We went to a local grocery store and purchased all the items required . . . for the lemonade stand."

He adds, "They learned that you have to buy stuff in order to sell a product."

His kids also gained more confidence dealing with the public and talking to people of all ages. "It's just all around good experiences and fun."

There were over a dozen stands in St. Paul for Lemonade Day this year.
