ST. PAUL - The Town of St. Paul is moving forward with hiring a third community peace officer.

St. Paul Municipal Enforcement currently employs two Level 1 Community Peace Officers. They are responsible for enforcing all Town of St. Paul bylaws, along with some provincial legislation.

"I am recommending the hiring of additional Level 1 Supervisory Community Peace Officer," said Director of Protective Services, Trevor Kotowich, during the Nov. 23 Town of St. Paul council meeting. This position would report directly to Kotowich.

"This position would be fully operational, and would coordinate with the other two CPOs regarding education and enforcement programs. By approving this additional position, we would be able to provide additional and more suitable coverage to continue to meet the community's needs," said Kotowich.

He noted that more time would be allowed for public education programs such as CPTED, Be A Tree, Bicycle Safety, along with more engagement with the business community.

The position was already part of the 2021 operating budget, heard council. The successful candidate would begin sometime in the new year. Kotowich recommended the town begin advertising for the position.

It is "very much a position that our community would like to see," said Coun. Nathan Taylor. He expressed concern about a pay grid not being available for the position, but Kotowich noted he could work within the existing pay grid for peace officers.

A motion to approve the request to hire an additional Level 1 Supervisory Community Peace Officer for the 2021 operating budget was carried.
