Trash bin townhall set for Nov. 3

ST. PAUL - A teletown hall to talk about trash collection is scheduled to take place on Nov. 3. Residents can take part in the teletown hall to get the details on how the municipality will be rolling out its new garbage bin program.

An open house had originally been scheduled for April 23 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The town has since decided to hold the public meeting through a telephone town hall, much like the one that was held in early October.

Resident are being asked to register ahead of time, by visiting the link posted on the Town of St. Paul website. The teletown hall is set to start at 6 p.m.

The town has been planning to switch over to new roll-out garbage bins, purchased by the town. The switchover allows for a more efficient pick-up with the town's new garbage truck. The new truck has the technology to pick up custom waste bins and empty them into the truck.

"Items and substances currently not permitted in your weekly waste pickup would still not be allowed in these bins," reads a brochure, created by the town. "Things like construction waste, grass clippings . . . paint and hazardous products wouldn’t be allowed. The operators of the trucks will be able to see if the bins contained these barred products and after a fair transition time and written warning, your bin would not be emptied. If you had more waste than your waste bin could hold you would need to take that extra waste to the transfer station."

The town will be purchasing some smaller bins also, for residents who do not require a large bin. And while the bins will be the responsibility of the homeowner, and will be numbered so they can be returned if they go missing, "Waste receptacles would be assigned to the property in question for life. If you were to sell your home and move, the waste receptacle would stay with the house," according to the brochure.

In some cases, back alleys in town are not big enough to allow for pick-up behind homes, and garbage pick-up may be moved to the front in those cases. A map is available through the town, showing which areas will be subject to back alley pick-up and which areas will have front street pick-up.
