St. Paul Fire Department, RCMP and EMS responded to a motor vehicle collision at highways 28 and 36 on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Cold Lake EMS and Ashmont Fire Services also attended the scene.
RCMP believes a red Dodge Ram pick-up truck driven by a 41-year-old female from Sherwood Park failed to stop at the stop sign while traveling north on Highway 36, according to a press release.
A westbound freightliner semi struck the pick-up on the passenger side. Both vehicles end up in the ditch. The semi struck a light standard, which fell onto the trailer.
Three children were also in the pick-up truck, one an infant. One child is believed to have received life threatening injuries, according to RCMP. STARS arrived on scene, landed north of the intersection and transported the child to a hospital in Edmonton.
The driver and another child were transported to St. Therese Healthcare Centre.
The semi driver, a 46-year-old male from Edmonton, was not injured.
Portions of the highway remained closed for a number of hours while emergency crews worked and to allow a collision analyst to investigate the scene.
Shortly after clearing the scene of the collision, emergency crews were dispatched to another collision on Highway 28 at the intersection of Highway 881.
A westbound vehicle on Highway 28 failed to negotiate a left turn on Highway 881 safely and an eastbound vehicle struck the turning vehicle, according to RCMP.
Responders transferred two drivers, the only occupants of the vehicles, to St. Therese Healthcare Centre for treatment. Both drivers have been released.
