Lac La Biche RCMP have confirmed that a suspicious object found on a property in the Bonesville subdivision was not an explosive.
On Tuesday, May 24 at about 9 a.m., Lac La Biche RCMP received a call that a "suspicious piece of PVC pipe" had been found in the grass on a property in the Bonesville subdivision five kilometres south of the Lac La Biche hamlet.
A Lakeland This Week reader contacted the newsroom on Thursday, saying a family friend had found the piece of pipe while cutting grass in the area.
When police got the call, it lead to a portion of the subdivision being blocked off for safety as local Mounties waited for the Alberta RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit to arrive at the scene.
When the bomb experts arrived, they found no explosives in the pipe.
"The PVC pipe was examined and determined not to be explosive," Lac La Biche RCMP Const. Cassandra Calverley told Lakeland This Week. "It was removed from the property for disposal."
"Pipe bombs" are improvised devices that use combustive mixtures and high pressure inside a sealed pipe to create explosions.
