LAC LA BICHE – Both kids and adults alike will be able to bring their artistic skills to the ice of the Swamp Cats Arena inside Lac La Biche’s Bold Centre for the upcoming ‘Paint the Ice’ event.

According to Hannah Williams, a recreation programmer with Lac La Biche County, the colourful afternoon of creativity is set to take place on July 20, from 1-3 p.m.

“This free, family-friendly activity gives participants of all ages the chance to draw, doodle, and paint directly on the ice surface before it’s removed for the season,” Williams told Lakeland This Week. “Come out, get creative, and help say goodbye to the ice in the most artistic way possible.”

Paints and brushes, Williams stated, will be provided for those who participate in the community art event and there is no registration required beforehand. Even though ‘Paint the Ice’ takes place on the ice surface just before it is removed, there is no skating during the event.

Williams explained that participants will walk directly on the ice in their regular footwear, and therefore, to be safe, it is recommended to wear shoes with a good grip along with a helmet. Although outside temperatures may feel like summer, inside the arena it will be a bit chilly, and according to Williams, it is a good idea to bring along some warm clothing as well.

The idea to host a unique event that gives members of the community a chance to use the ice of the Swamp Cats Arena as their canvas, Williams said, came after County recreational staff saw other recreation facilities hosting similar creative send-offs to their ice seasons.

“Organizers thought it would be a fun and engaging way to bring the community together here in Lac La Biche. This will be the first time the event is happening at the Bold Centre,” she said.

Paint the Ice, Williams said, is a wonderful way for local kids to get creative, have fun, and be part of a shared community experience. She added that it gives them a chance to express themselves in a space they normally associate with sports, helping them see the arena in a new and exciting way.

“Whether you're an artist or just looking for a fun way to spend the afternoon with family and friends, this event is all about creativity, connection, and community. It's also a great way to celebrate the end of the ice season in a colourful and memorable way. Everyone is welcome, no skill required,” she said.

What happens to the ice after it has been turned into a colourful masterpiece? As Williams explains, photos of the finished artwork will be taken during the event and shared on the County social pages, so the community can look back on the creativity that was brought to the ice.
