Hanson wins UCP nomination

Current Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills UCP MLA Dave Hanson confirmed late Wednesday night that he had won the United Conservation Party nomination for the new Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul riding.

Other candidates in the running included Glenn Spiess, and Cold Lake mayor Craig Copeland.

Voting wrapped up in St. Paul at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, and had taken place over three days in different voting stations across what will be the new constituency in the next provincial election.

“I’m ecstatic, actually, and it’s a relief. It’s been a long haul since June and a lot of work for myself, my wife, and my team,” said Hanson. “It’s always good to get to the end, and I commend the other candidates for a job well done, hard work, and keeping it clean.”

United Conservative Leader Jason Kenney issued a statement following the nomination, also confirming that Hanson would be the party's candidate for the Bonnyville-Cold Lake for the 2019 provincial election and congratulating him on the win.

Overall, 1,317 members cast their ballots between Sept. 10 to 12 in Cold Lake, Bonnyville, Glendon, St. Paul, and Elk Point.

“First elected as the MLA for Lac La Biche-St. Paul-Two Hills in 2015, Dave has served his constituents, and all Albertans with skill and integrity. As the UCP Caucus Indigenous Relations Critic, he has been an effective advocate for Indigenous communities across Alberta. I am pleased to know Dave will continue to be an integral part of our United Conservative team," said Kenney.

Hanson thanked the other candidates for their participation in the democratic process.
