ASIRT investigating officer involved shooting that took place in MD of Bonnyville

As part of the investigation, ASIRT is asking anyone who may have information about the Feb. 9 incident to contact investigators.

BONNYVILLE/ST. PAUL - The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has released preliminary information regarding an incident that involved a police officer discharging their service firearm when responding to an incident in the MD of Bonnyville last Friday.

Bonnyville RCMP were dispatched to a call the evening of Feb. 9, regarding a male who was acting violently inside a home on the rural property,

"When the RCMP attended the residence, an interaction with the male occurred inside," according to information released by ASIRT on Feb. 13. "One officer discharged their service firearm, striking the male and causing serious injuries."

Emergency medical care was provided by officers until emergency medical services arrived to bring the man to hospital.

"A firearm was found at the scene of the shooting," confirms ASIRT. "No officers or any members of the public were injured as a result of this incident."

ASIRT will investigate the use of force by officers, and no other information will be released at this time.

As part of the investigation, ASIRT is asking anyone who may have information about the incident to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.

"ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct."

RCMP confirmed over the weekend that a man was shot by police during a confrontation at a rural residence near Chicken Hill Lake in the MD of Bonnyville.
