BONNYVILLE - Warm, dry conditions have prompted a fire advisory to be put into place for the MD of Bonnyville No. 87, Summer Village of Bonnyville Beach, Summer Village of Pelican Narrows, as well as the Village of Glendon, as of Aug. 27.
The continued warm temperatures create conditions where wildfires can start easily and spread quickly, according to information from the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA).
“Be cautious when spending time outdoors and avoid activities that could potentially spark a wildfire,” states the fire authority.
Information released by the BRFA on Wednesday outlines both what is permitted and prohibited under the advisory, which is in effect as of Aug. 28.
According to the BRFA, existing fire permits are valid, and permit holders must follow all safe burning conditions outlined in their permits.
“New permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis for essential burning only,” said the BRFA.
Residents of the area wanting to enjoy safe campfires in these waning days of summer may still do so. However, the BRFA confirmed, any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a campfire, is prohibited, as are fireworks and exploding targets.
As fall approaches, and grasses begin to dry, an unchecked, smouldering burn pile could easily ignite these fuels and cause a wildfire explained the BRFA.
“Landowners who have completed burns over the summer are encouraged to revisit the locations to ensure the fires are extinguished and cold to the touch,” reads the information.
