Less than a week after a byelection took place in the Village of Glendon, Roger Belknap has already attended his first council meeting, where he was officially sworn into his position as councillor on Sept. 23.
Roger Belknap is the new Village of Glendon councillor.
On Sept. 17, residents in the Village of Glendon voted in a byelection, which was held to replace former Coun. Scott Lundgren, who passed away unexpectedly in June. Three candidates put their names forward to fill the vacant seat on council.
When all was said and done, Belknap claimed the open chair with 44 votes. Edward Kryzanowski had 36 votes, and Randy Harrop ended the day with 14.
Speaking shortly after he attended Monday’s council meeting, he acknowledged that there is “definitely going to be a learning curve,” and “lots to learn,” as he tackles the new position.
He added it was a relief, but also a bit surreal when the votes were counted last Tuesday.
Belknap has been living in Glendon for about seven years and currently runs his own landscaping business. Born in Quebec, Belknap said he spent most of his teenage years living in Ontario. After that, he moved around a bit, but kept coming back to Alberta.
When asked what he hopes to get out of his position on the village council, Belknap says it’s not about what he wants to get out of the job, but rather what he hopes he can put in.
“It’s not a luxurious career by any means,” noted Belknap, adding he is hoping he can make a difference in the community.
Specifically, he would “like to see things cleaned up a bit,” literally.
Belknap said he is thankful for the opportunity to serve on the village council and represent his community.
