BONNYVILLE - What started off as a report of a suspicious person on a property west of town resulted in local RCMP arresting and charging a 35-year-old male with trafficking methamphetamine. 

On Dec. 29 at about 4 p.m., Bonnyville police were contacted by a concerned citizen about a suspicious person on their property. 

The caller notified responding officers the individual had left the area heading west on Hwy. 28. 

RCMP found Brett Rasmussen, a 35-year-old Edmonton male, and charged him with mischief. 

During a search of his belongings, officers found 34-grams of methamphetamine. 

Rasmussen was also breaching “multiple conditions,” noted Sgt. Kim Hillier. 

A search of Rasmussen’s vehicle resulted in police locating an additional “small amount of meth,” Hillier described. 

As a result, Rasmussen has been charged with possession for trafficking, mischief, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession of break-in instruments. 

He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Bonnyville court Tuesday, Jan. 7. 

Fuel thief caught in the act

RCMP are searching for an attempted fuel thief who was spooked after being caught attempting to steal gas from a truck on Dec. 20. 

A citizen called police at about 9 a.m. that day after he woke up in his semi truck to a male attempting to steal fuel while the vehicle was parked at the Co-op Cardlock in Bonnyville. 

The suspect fled in a silver truck. 

Police are asking the public for any information about the attempted theft. 

Personal items stolen at Neighbourhood Inn

A woman was enjoying a night out when she discovered her wallet and cellphone were stolen from the Neighbourhood Inn on Dec. 20. 

Police were contacted by the victim at about 4 p.m., however, the woman was unable to provide a description of the suspect because she didn’t witness the theft. 

“The suspect is still outstanding,” explained Hillier.

Posting on social media paid off

One resident has the public and his quick thinking to thank for the recovery of his vehicle, after he reported it stolen to police on        Dec. 23. 

According to Hillier, the victim posted a photo of his vehicle on social media, letting the public know it was missing and to report any sightings to local police. 

The 2006 GMC Sierra was later recovered by Cold Lake RCMP and has since been returned to its owner. 

“The more eyes the better,” noted Hillier. 

Known liquor thief once again behind bars

Cody Cardinal-Hill has found himself in jail for stealing liquor on Jan. 4. 

Employees of a Bonnyville liquor store recognized Cardinal-Hill from previous incidences, and reported him as the suspect of the theft of a 60-ounce bottle of alcohol. 

Cardinal-Hill has been charged with theft under $5,000.

Multiple vehicles stolen over the holidays

A red 1996 Dodge Dakota with a horse sticker on the back tailgate was reported stolen from 50 Ave. on Dec. 19. 

Two days later, a resident reported their truck missing. It was later located abandoned and burnt out completely in the Cold Lake area. 

On Dec. 22, a woman notified police her black 2019 Buick Encore was taken.

A 2004 Ford F250 was stolen from a cul-de-sac outside of town on   Dec. 26. The complainant told police there was a chop saw in the box of the two-door truck. 

RCMP are asking the public to report any sightings of a stolen 2000 dark blue Ford SRW. It was taken sometime overnight Dec. 26 from in town. 

The owners of a white Chevy GMT 400  are hoping someone has information about their stolen vehicle, which was taken on Dec. 27. 

A 2000 Chevy Silverado, grey in colour, was reported stolen from 51 Ave. on Dec. 29. 

Police are still on the look out for a white utility trailer that had been stolen on Dec. 31. According to the complainant, inside of the white trailer with Off-Road Protection decals on the side, was an orange and black Polaris Razor 1000.
