Bonnyville RCMP Report: Fire destroys vacant house

Passerby alerts authorities

BONNYVILLE - Thankfully no one was home when a fire broke out at a house on Township Rd. 630.

A concerned driver noticed the house fire while on his way to work at 6:30 a.m. on July 4 and called the Bonnyville RCMP. The caller attempted to make sure anyone inside the house was safe, luckily the home was vacant at the time.

"The home owner is currently out of the province and confirmed that no one was at home," said Sgt. Kim Hillier in a press release.

Fire services attended and extinguished the blaze, but the house was completely destroyed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fraud calls continue

The Bonnyville RCMP want to remind residents that fraud calls are still "a staple" and to be vigilant.

The Canadian Revenue Agency and the RCMP don't send automated messages advising people of warrants, social security number breaches, or overdue tax accounts. Never give out personal financial information over the phone, and notify the RCMP of suspected fraudulent activity.

"Let the criminal fraudsters and scammers look for real jobs like the rest of us," said Hillier.

Dangerous driver arrested in town

Complaints from the public about a dangerous driver led police to arrest a 47-year-old Saskatoon man.

On July 3, just before 9 p.m., local RCMP received a report about a vehicle not maintaining speeds and cutting off other drivers.

The suspect vehicle was located in town and the driver failed the roadside screening device. He was arrested and taken to the detachment when he provided breath samples over the legal limit.

He was released on a notice to appear in Bonnyville court.

Thieves rummage through vehicles

A property owner contacted RCMP on July 5 to report that someone had entered her unlocked detached garaged and stole loose change from her vehicles, as well as a 25-litre jerry can of gasoline.

Video footage shows a black or dark coloured Dodge Durango enter the driveway and park next to the garage. There was no damage to any property.

On July 9, police got a call from a complainant about someone going into his vehicle while it was parked on the 37 block of 44 Ave. in Bonnyville.

His driver's license, insurance card, and the key fob for his truck were stolen from the vehicle.

Anyone with information can contact the Bonnyville RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Erratic driver leads to stolen vehicle

The RCMP received multiple complaints about a black Chevrolet Impala driving erratically on the highway around 2:30 p.m. on July 9.

The driver was swerving in and out of traffic, driving with a flat tire, and into oncoming traffic.

Members later located the vehicle abandoned and found it had been reported stolen. The investigation is ongoing.
