Mohamed Ahmed Abdi was caught sitting in the backseat of the wrong vehicle.
The 33-year-old was arrested after Bonnyville RCMP received reports of suspicious people hanging outside of a local hotel.
Police began to investigate and were led to a vehicle parked in a residential area. From what officers could tell, the vehicle looked as though it had broken down.
Looking into it further, RCMP learned the vehicle had been reported stolen out of the Calgary area and the three suspects, two males and a female, were arrested.
Among those in the vehicle was Abdi, who had been sitting in the backseat when officers arrived.
At the time of the incident, Abdi was on conditions including to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.
During his appearance in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, Sept. 24, Abdi pleaded guilty to being in a motor vehicle without the registered owner's consent, breaching the conditions of a recognizance, and failing to attend court.
Crown prosecutor Terry Mazerolle told Honourable Judge Ivan Ladouceur they were seeking $900 in fines as a result.
Once released from the Calgary Remand Centre, Abdi plans on attending a treatment centre in hopes of addressing his opioid addiction.
Ladouceur agreed to the fines.
