BONNYVILLE - Extendicare Bonnyville hosted a fundraiser event in support of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, and were lent a helping hand by volunteers from the Royal Canadian Air Force 4 Wing Cold Lake.
The event took place on May 15, and brought staff, volunteers, residents, and attendees together to enjoy food and activities in support of the cause.
“We had a barbecue and had our head chef make hot dogs and potato salad. We had all sorts of pop and snacks, and then after the barbecue we had some activities. We were tie dyeing scrunchies and T-shirts. There was a corn hole and rubber axe throwing game. There were little prizes like licorice for the residents,” said Busch.
Busch said the residents enjoyed participating in the activities and meeting new people.
“I think it’s important to support this cause and raise money to give directly to the Alzheimer's Society, because it benefits individuals living with Alzheimer's, and that’s a lot of the population here [at Extendicare Bonnyville]. And it’s important to educate as well, that this is an important topic and we need to do everything we can to support them,” said Busch.
The event also offered people paper flowers where they could write down the names of those affected by Alzheimer's that they knew. The flowers were put up around the front of the facility.
Busch also spoke about the support they received from the volunteers from 4 Wing Cold Lake.
“They were helping us with the bake sale, but they had also helped us set up all the stations and were helping during lunchtime as well. They stayed pretty much the whole day,” said Busch
The event had scheduled in a walk that was set to depart from the Extendicare building towards Pontiac Park
“We had to have it inside because it was too cold, so we got a big group of people and walked our halls together,” said Busch.
