Kehewin chief re-elected, three new faces join council

Eric Gadwa has officially been re-elected as Chief of Kehewin Cree Nation after winning the election on March 24. Gadwa received 208 votes, beating out challengers Willie John who had 173 votes, and Rodney John who picked up 90 votes.

The election of chief followed the band council elections, which were held on March 17. The council election results saw four councillors re-elected and three new faces join council.

Ernest Gadwa received 188 votes, Eric Gadwa and Willie John both brought in 182 votes and Rodney John picked up 160 votes, as all four councillors were easily re-elected.

The three new faces will be Vernon Watchmaker who finished fourth with 166 votes, Gordon Gadwa, who received with 164 votes and Jason Mountain who narrowly grabbed the final spot with 158 votes.

Mountain beat out fellow candidate Trevor John by one vote, as John finished with 157 votes.

Gordon Alger, Electoral Officer with the First Nations Governance out of Meadow Lake, Sk, confirmed the 2014 band council and chief election results, which saw 33 people throw their names in the hat to run for council and three run for chief. A total of 14 candidates received over 100 votes, while seven candidates received fewer than 50 votes apiece.
