BONNYVILLE - Sukhchain Khaira is the Town of Bonnyville’s new bylaw enforcement officer.

Khaira, who was recently sworn in by Quinton Wintfley, chief administrative officer (CAO) for the Town of Bonnyville, has a background primarily focused on security.

“I’ve held positions working as a security guard for a hospital with Alberta Health Services, events, warehouse, and in a high-risk building environment in the Calgary area, which is my hometown,” Khaira recently told Lakeland This Week.

In addition to security experience working in various environments, Khaira also has a criminal justice diploma from Bow Valley College, along with an Emergency Medical Responder certification from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).

“I also completed my Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) in Lac La Biche County last year, which taught me the importance of becoming a peace officer and the fundamentals I must know,” he explained.

As the bylaw enforcement officer for the Town of Bonnyville, Khaira will be working alongside Wanda Tomm, the town’s community peace officer.

Khaira, according to information from the municipality, “will help uphold our community standards, ensuring Bonnyville remains safe, welcoming, and ‘North of Expected’.”

Khaira will place emphasis on informing members of the public regarding the municipal bylaws that are in effect.

“One of the issues I think that needs to be addressed is educating residents about the bylaws the Town has in place to ensure they’re following them,” he said.

He is also focused on teaching folks about the importance of maintaining their properties.

So far, Khaira has noticed that the Town of Bonnyville’s Public Safety Department has received a few complaints about unsightly properties.

“I’ve learned in the summer months this is quite normal and educating residents about what is considered unsightly is a top priority,” he stated.

When he isn’t on duty ensuring that bylaws are being followed and keeping the citizens of the Town of Bonnyville safe, Khaira can be found participating in various types of physical activities.

“Outside of work, I like to keep active. I go to the gym, I play sports, I love to try new things that keep me moving. I’m a big swimmer, and really anything that gets me outside,” he said. “Since I’m also new here, I want to learn everything over time about what the town has to offer.”
