BONNYVILLE - On Dec. 16, the Knights of Columbus delivered 302 food hampers to families in need - an increase from last year’s 279. Along with the food hampers were gits of toys collected and wrapped by Santa's Elves.
The longstanding holiday initiative started 40 years ago, with demand continuing to grow every year. Each hamper costs around $100 to make and contains Christmas staples like turkey, ham, potatoes, and oranges, and is delivered to families in Bonnyville and surrounding communities. The Sobey’s and Brosseau’s grocery stores supplied the food, while the Bonnyville Native Friendship Centre accepted and received application forms from families in need.
Last year’s blizzard-like weather conditions weren’t ideal for delivery, but luckily conditions this year were much better.
“There was no heavy snow on the ground from the night before. The weather conditions were perfect - I think it was only zero degrees Saturday morning. So that helped as well,” says Dave Scott from the Knights of Columbus.
“We were really thankful for all the volunteers showed up,” added Scott.
The Knights of Columbus and the Santa's Elves would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who donated to the cause to ensure its success and extend a Merry Christmas to all and best wishes for 2024.
