Should left turns be restricted along main street during peak times? That's the question Bonnyville's town council is looking for an answer to.

Council passed a motion tasking the policing committee and town engineers to come up with options for the municipality to discuss further during their Tuesday, July 9 meeting.

"We would need Alberta Transportation's approval to change anything at those lights," noted CAO Mark Power.

Coun. Rene Van Brabant brought the topic up during council's June 25 meeting, to address congestion on main street as a result of people trying to make left-hand turns at the intersections. While he believes there's space for people to pass on the right-hand side, it's not always an option during particularly busy times.

As studies on the intersections at 50 Ave. and 46 St. (by Sobeys) and at 50 Ave. and 50 St. (by Brosseau's Department Store) have been conducted in the past, Mayor Gene Sobolewski said he wasn't in favour of a complete ban of left-hand turns.

"I think we need to do a little more (research), or push the province into undertaking some of the recommendations from the previous reports," he added.

Escape room coming to Bonnyville

Residents will be able to test their knowledge and problem solving skills at the town's first escape room.

Mythik Games Inc. had their development permit approved during council's meeting.

The business will be located in the basement of the Executive Centre at 4716 50 Ave., and along with the escape rooms, will feature board games and a café.

It will be an escape room business, which will include board games and a café located in the basement of the Executive Centre at 4716 50 Ave.

While the location doesn't have a sufficient amount of parking for the type of business, council agreed to approve the application with the variance and review any complaints that may be received at the end of their lease.

LCSD requests assistance

Lakeland Catholic School District (LCSD) asked for the town's support for an upcoming event.

During her presentation, assistant superintendent Pamela Guilbault explained the district is bringing speaker Dr. Jody Carrington, a worldwide acclaimed professional speaker and author, to the area. They plan to host an event that's open to the public at Notre Dame High School on Friday, Sept. 29.

"Through the stories that she shares, stories that will resonate with similarities to our own lives, we hope to empower parents, families, and community members to build and fortify lasting relationships," she said.

Originally, LCSD was only going to have Carrington speak to their staff, but decided to open up the event to the community.

The municipality referred them to the Bonnyville and District FCSS for funding.

Coun. Lorna Sotoroschuk, who sits on the FCSS board, made the suggestion and didn't see the request for financial support being an issue.

Council gives back

Council voted in favour of lending a hand to some organizations during their meeting.

The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) golf tournament at the Grand Centre Golf and Country Club and the Kehewin Cree Nation's Indian Relay teams, which will help with expenses, will receive $250 each from the town for sponsorship.

The municipality also approved the Lakeland Centre for FASD's request to host their International FASD Day barbecue in the town hall parking lot.

Normally, the event is held at the Bonnyville and District Centennial Centre as the Bonnyville offices are in the building. However, as a result of the increased amount of traffic due to Bonnyville Centralized High School (BCHS) moving there in the fall, they requested to change the venue.
