Tanner Boser of Bonnyville was able to defend his Unified Heavyweight title against Joe Yager in Edmonton at Unified 28.
Boser was coming off of a win back in June against Tony Lopez and was hoping to keep that momentum in the Oct. 1 fight.
He was originally scheduled to take on Nick Rossborough for this fight, but the card changed Boser's opponent in this fight to Yager.
The fight lasted a total of five rounds where Boser won in a unanimous decision from the judges.
"It was a very tough fight... it was very exhausting," explained Boser. "Joe Yager was a very tough opponent and I was glad to get the win and I was able to out strike him in the later rounds and negate his wrestling a little more but it was a close fight."
Boser is now 11-2 in his career and this was the third fight he had won by a judge's decision.
"It feels pretty good, it's not just the heavyweight belt that's the big deal to me. I proved without shadow of a doubt that I am the best heavyweight in Canada and that I can fight high ranked international opponents, so that's what is most important to me."
Yager is six-feet two inches tall and weights 252 pounds. Boser, who is also six-foot two and 260 pounds said he is recovering from the battle.
"I feel fine now, I don't have any injuries from the fight. Yeah I am alright, but it takes a while to recover after something like that, that's for sure."
Boser did a lot of training in preparation to retain his title belt.
"I train two or three times a day at various different gyms. I train at Hayabusa Training Centre in St. Alberta, and Snakepit MMA in Sherwood Park and Frank Lee's Muay Tai in Edmonton and I also have been lifting weights and doing cardio," said Boser. "I worked hard, I have trained hard and I have good training partners and coaches."
Retaining the belt and winning was important for Boser, but he had more to prove at this title fight.
"It feels pretty good... I proved without shadow of a doubt that I am the best heavyweight in Canada and that I can fight high ranked international opponents, so that's what is most important to me."
Boser will take a few months off to train and will hope to continue on to bigger and better things.
"I'm hoping I get signed to a bigger promotion now, but my manager is working on it. I don't know if that's going to pan out yet or not so fingers crossed for UFC but if not I'll fight Unified again in December."
