Local woman donates 16 inches of hair to wigs for cancer patients

Jordan John hadn't cut her hair since she was four-years-old. Now 18-years-old, Jordan is donating her hair at a Rapunzel-like length of 16 inches to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program, which makes real-hair wigs for women fighting cancer.

Jordan John hadn't cut her hair since she was four-years-old.

Now 18-years-old, Jordan is donating her hair at a Rapunzel-like length of 16 inches to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program, which makes real-hair wigs for women fighting cancer. Her hair measured double the length required by the program for a donation.

Jordan's grandfather died of cancer when she was 12-years-old. She vowed then to continue growing her hair in his honour, so that she could donate it to cancer some day. Her mother, Crystal John, wasn't surprised in the slightest.

"She's always had such a kind heart," smiled Crystal. She watched proudly as her daughter giggled about her super-short new cut into the hairdressers mirror at the Jagged Edge two weeks ago.

Crystal told the Nouvelle that Jordan's grandfather's cancer took him quickly, in just two months after he was diagnosed for the second time. Crystal said Jordan was very humble about donating her hair, leaving her mother to make sure everyone knew about her daughter's inspiring moment.

"As long as it makes someone else happy, I think it's a good thing to do," Jordan shrugged, displaying the modesty her mother had described.

The Notre Dame High School graduate researched for a week to make sure she knew exactly what was needed in order to make her donation. She explained her hair had to be braided with elastics at each end to keep it for packaging and shipping. It also had to measure eight inches between the elastics.

Lastly, she picked a hairdresser to cut her hair. She said she had only ever trusted hairstylist Steven Schweigert with her hair, so the choice was easy.

Schweigert was excited to share the moment with Jordan.

"When you're doing something like this the good karma is going to come back to you," Schweigert told Jordan.

She couldn't believe how light her hair felt after she had cut it all off. She said she looked forward to not having to be so careful about her hair as she explained she'd caught it in car doors and seat belts in the past.

Jordan isn't sure what she plans to do in the future, but she expects she'll grow her hair out again.
