BONNYVILLE – It was more than just an excuse to get together and visit. The St. John’s United Church Women’s Auxiliary gathered on May 16 to share a meal and present donations to the Dragonfly Counselling and Support Centre.

Nearly $100 was raised, as well as comfort items such as quilts, stuffed animals, essential oils, journals, fidget toys and more were collected to be given or used by clients of the Dragonfly Centre.

On hand to collect the donations was Sierra Griep, a summer student and administrative assistant with the sexual assault centre. The Dragonfly Centre provides free counselling, crisis support, police and court advocacy to individuals of any age that have experienced sexual violence.

Rita Normand was one of the women who spearheaded the donation drive for the Dragonfly Centre.

“The cause was important, and they provide these services for free,” said Normand, speaking to why the non-profit was selected by the group for a donation drive.

Earlier in the year, staff from the centre presented to the women's group and highlighted the services the Dragonfly Centre provides across northeast and north central Alberta.

“It was a real eye-opener for a lot of us,” said Normand.

While sexual violence is rarely discussed openly, Normand shared that during her time as a teacher she saw first-hand the impact of sexual violence on survivors.

“Having comforting items available to offer a survivor can be that little something that lets them feel that they are not alone,” said Amber Cook, the communications specialist for the Dragonfly Centre.

“When a survivor of sexual violence begins their healing journey with us, it can be an emotional and sensitive moment.”

Cook shared gratitude on behalf of the Dragonfly Centre to the women of St. John’s United Church, adding that the items provided will support both counselling clients and those needing police and court support.

“These ladies have given so much of their hearts to our centre, we are honoured to be part of such a thoughtful and giving community,” said Cook.

The St. John’s United Church Women’s Auxiliary regularly collect donations for organizations such as Stepping Stones Crisis Society, men’s shelters, Santa’s Anonymous and local food banks.
