One man has turned himself in, while another suspect is still being sought by RCMP after a shooting in Cold Lake on May 31.

According to Sgt. Brent Sawatzky of the Cold Lake RCMP, officers responded to complaints of shots fired in a residential area of Cold Lake North at about 2:40 a.m. last Friday.

Though Sawatzky said police responded very quickly, both suspects in the shooting as well as the victim had fled the scene before officers arrived.

Miguel Angel Alvarado, 31 years old, and Brent Mercredi, 23 years old, have been identified as being involved in the shooting and warrants for the arrests on charges of attempted murder have been issued for both men.

By the Nouvelle's press deadline Monday, Alvarado remains at large and police are asking the public for any information which could lead to his arrest, however, Mercredi turned himself into police on Saturday in Saskatoon and is now in custody at the Cold Lake detachment.

“(Alvarado) is considered armed and dangerous,” said Sawatsky. “We are asking the public for any information but are urging the public not to approach the individual but instead to call police.”

Alvarado is described by RCMP as Hispanic, bald, six foot two inches tall and weighing approximately 240 pounds.

Sawatzky said Alvarado's whereabouts are unknown to police at this time, but that the suspect is known to “live and frequent the City of Edmonton.”

According to RCMP, the suspects were last seen driving a newer black Dodge Ram truck with the Alberta license plate BHW 2725 and “significant damage to the rear of the truck.”

Police say the early stages of the investigation demonstrate this was not a random act of violence, as the victim and suspects are known to each other.

Following the shooting, the victim transported himself by vehicle to the Cold Lake Healthcare Centre before being transported by air to the University of Alberta Hospital, where he remains in serious but stable condition, according to Sawatzky.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the location of the suspects are asked to call the Cold Lake RCMP at (780) 594-3302, their local police detachment, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). If your information leads to an arrest, you qualify for a cash award up to $2,000.
