Well-known offender, 30-year-old Derek Drake, was arrested by Bonnyville RCMP after the Village of Glendon was put under a precautionary lockdown.
On Thursday, Sept. 19, the small community, including Glendon School, were asked to lock their doors while police dealt with an ongoing incident.
According to Sgt. Kim Hillier, Drake, a Cold Lake male, had been spotted with what was described by a witness calling into police as a large hunting knife.
"A citizen saw a male run from a residence carrying a long hunting knife and was running near Glendon School," described Hillier. "Obviously there was a quick RCMP presence in the area."
Two responding officers chased Drake on foot to a nearby bush "where we held containment for two-and-a-half hours."
In order to guarantee safety and ensure Drake didn't come into contact with students, RCMP requested Glendon School undergo a lockdown.
"Once we had our Police Dog Services (PDS) on scene, they were called from a distance so it did take them a bit to get here, but within three minutes of them arriving on scene, the suspect was arrested," Hillier said.
At the time of his arrest, Drake was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants including possession of stolen property offences relating to a residential search warrant conducted by Cold Lake RCMP in August.
"He was arrested and taken into custody without incident," added Hillier, adding once PDS were on scene, Drake turned himself in.
Hillier said Bonnyville RCMP are grateful for the assistance they received from the public, who were quick to lock their doors and stay out of the area.
"It's a strange and dangerous situation for a small village, but we do appreciate that everyone was helpful and cooperative."
Drake is being held in Bonnyville cells and is waiting to speak to bail.
