The MD of Bonnyville's new streetlight policy is shedding some light on future use.
Council approved the installation and energizing of streetlights policy during their committee meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
The new procedures cover existing areas where residents have requested streetlights to be installed and the requirements for new streetlights being built in multi-lot subdivisions.
"What we had followed in the past in the new subdivisions, is that after 50 per cent development, we would energize the streetlights in the first phase," explained director of planning and development Caroline Palmer. "Now what has happened, is ATCO has instituted an idling fee, which equates pretty much to the same cost as if it were lit."
The policy expands on the previous procedures for when the MD would energize streetlights in new multi-lot subdivisions, which was when the development phase reached 50 per cent completion.

Film festival won't be making a stop in the MD
The mountains won't be on display for residents after council voted against applying to be a stop on the Banff Centre Film Festival World Tour.
The event would feature documentaries produced by filmmakers that were aired during the festival held in Banff.
The original intent was to use Kinosoo Ridge as a viewing site if the MD was approved as a host, however, the location didn't meet the criteria. If the municipality moved ahead, the Grande Parlour would be the venue, with Kinosoo being a partner for the event.
According to Reeve Greg Sawchuk, the whole reason for applying for the program was to promote the local ski hill.
"The only way I could see supporting it is if we had our own short film, which focused on Kinosoo Ridge and everything that we're going to be offering up there," he stated.
Council denied submitting an application due to the change in venue, but could discuss the opportunity at a later date if more information becomes available.
MD adds boat launch to their inventory
Council will be proceeding with their application for a designated license of occupation for a boat launch located on Crown land at Birch Ridge, on the north side of Cold Lake.
"It came to our attention there's a boat launch there and apparently the odd time we've maintained it," Palmer noted.
The municipality will add it to their list of boat launches, and residents will be able to access it.
Exploring options for road maintenance
Members of council will be attending a demonstration from Industrial Road Bond Services to see their unique road procedure.
Coun. Darcy Skarsen suggested the municipality look into it as a possibility to address dust control and ensuring roads last longer.
"They have a shop on the east side of town, they're going to be doing their driveway and parking area, and they wanted council to view a demo of it while they do their laneway to show the procedure," he explained.
Sawchuk agreed different avenues should be considered in order to address issues that have emerged with MD roadways.
