The MD of Bonnyville agreed it's time to put in an application for the Disaster Recovery Assistance Program.

During their regular council meeting on Wednesday, July 26, council voted to submit an application for disaster recovery assistance that would include the entire MD of Bonnyville, not just Moose Lake.

"We decided that for the application for Disaster Recovery Assistance we needed to broaden the application from Moose Lake to address all of the other areas that are having similar problems," expressed Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) chief Brian McEvoy.

Should their application prove successful, residents would then be able to apply for funding based on the damage that has been caused to their homes and properties by the high water levels.

The high water levels have caused an estimated $5.6 million in agricultural loss. See more in next week's edition of the Nouvelle.

Council agreed to make some changes to the MD of Bonnyville fire services bylaw.

The changes will see restrictions to open fires within 100-metres of a trestle or bridge along the Iron Horse Trail. For the full story, check out the Aug. 1 Bonnyville Nouvelle.

The water levels at Crane Lake are too high for the Western Canadian Watercross Association (WCWA) races.

From September 1 to 3, the WCWA was set to host their competition at Crane Lake. However, due to high water levels, the MD of Bonnyville has requested the event be held elsewhere.

Instead, the races will be moved to Alex, AB.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards, and on Wednesday the MD of Bonnyville was informed that they too could nominate a volunteer for their efforts.

The awards were established as a way of recognizing the contributions volunteers have made across the province. Overall there are six awards, two in each category of youth, adult, and senior.

They will be presented at the International Volunteer Day event on December 5, at the Government House in Edmonton.

The deadline for nominations is September 15.

The MD of Bonnyville reached out to Alberta Transportation requesting that they consider a speed reduction to a stretch of Highway 28 west of the Town of Bonnyville.

Alberta Transportation responded with a letter to the MD explaining that they are aware of these concerns and are looking into the issue.
