A fatal collision between a motorcycle and minivan in Bonnyville on July 22 left one man dead and a boy seriously injured.

A 23-year-old Cold Lake resident was killed after his motorcycle struck the passenger side of a minivan at the intersection of 45 Street and 45 Avenue around 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.

According to RCMP, witnesses reported the motorcycle was believed to have been traveling at an excess speed and ignored a yield sign. The driver was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"For whatever reason the operator of the motorcycle didn't stop at the yield sign and went through at a fairly high rate of speed. That is what we are being told," said Bonnyville RCMP Staff Sergeant Luis Gandolfi. "That (information) is coming from our witnesses at the scene who are reporting hearing an engine racing and the vehicle running through a yield sign."

A 12-year-old boy who was sitting in the passenger side of the minivan was seriously injured by the collision and was flown via STARS air ambulance to an Edmonton hospital for treatment. All of the other occupants in the van suffered only minor injuries.

The condition of the young boy is not known at this time.

"We've checked in with the University hospital (on July 23) and they have not gotten back to us yet," said Gandolfi.

As of July 23, Gandolfi was unable to release the name of the deceased victim. Officers were still trying to contact the family.

"We can tell one (family member) but there may be others that have not been reached," said Gandolfi. "We like to check to see if they have had enough time to contact everyone that may have been effected."

Local RCMP are continuing to investigate the collision.
