The restoration project for Muriel Creek is underway and awaiting approval from Alberta Environment.

During the MD of Bonnyville's council meeting on Wednesday, July 10, Matt Janz, general manager of environmental and protective services, gave an update on the design.

"Most of you are aware that we experience high water in the Charlotte and Barreyre Lake area, and this plan is to help remove some of the blockages in our creek system that we have some rights to and have to do some maintenance to," he explained.

The municipality identified nine obstacles in their investigation of the area in 2018, and the first phase will have the MD addressing those issues.

"We have gained permission to enter upon the land, and to remove big structures from there from the landowners, and all of those approvals have been sent to Alberta Environment for their approval," Janz detailed, adding they're expecting to hear back from the province within the next 45 days.

Road closure a topic of discussion

The MD directed administration to bring back documentation to register a license of occupation and closure of road plan 4421PX, off Range Road 425.

As the road isn't up to the standards for the municipality, closing the road will allow them to survey an existing trail used for recreation by residents and to apply for a license of occupation through the province.

"We turn over the license qualifications to the landowners, because the road doesn't meet any MD specifications what so ever... The landowners are in favour of having this in their name, it would be like a long, private driveway for them," he detailed.

Mercier was confident the road closure wouldn't affect other residents in the area.

Municipality makes contributions

As a result of weather damage, the Franchere Social Community Centre requested $5,000 for the replacement of an event tent. It will be funded from transfers to recreation boards.

The MD agreed to support the Cold Lake Valour Place Committee golf tournament, which will be held at the Cold Lake Golf and Winter Club on Saturday, Sept. 7, for $1,000.

All of the proceeds raised from the event go to Valour Place in Edmonton, which allows local members of the RCMP and first responders, veterans, and current military members and their families access to medical services without incurring some of the major expenses that come with having a medical issue.
