BONNYVILLE – Earlier this month, 16 athletes from Bonnyville’s three high schools qualified to compete in events for Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) track and field.
Many of the local athletes achieved personal bests over the two-day event held at Foote Field in Edmonton on June 2-3.
École Notre Dame High School (NDHS) sent the most student athletes to provincials after winning the NEASAA 2A Zone banner in track and field. Zones Track and Field was hosted in St. Paul in May.
“We ended up having 10 students from our school qualify for provincial track and field this year,” said Travis Symon, the athletic director of Notre Dame High School.
NDHS students who qualified for Provincials included Jordyn Skarsen, Kennedy Carter, Olivia Keller, Angelyn Stanley, Justin Bellisle, Zoe MacLellan, Andie Grambo, Claira Krawchuk, Atley Chachula, and Sarah Depner.
Bonnyville Centralized High School (BCHS) sent five Grade 12 athletes to Provincials who qualified in their respective track and field events.
Attending Provincials under the BCHS banner was Aiden Lawton, Cooper Prybysh, Julian Gutierrez, Tanner Dadey and Zackariah Pitcher-Lumely.
Representing École des Beaux-Lacs was track runner Danielle Antoniuk.
Double gold medallist
Vaulting to the top of the podium for the second year in a row, was Bonnyville track star Jordyn Skarsen.
Skarsen competed in a handful of junior-level events this year, placing in the top 10 for three events including pole vault, hurdles and long jump. She was also the only Bonnyville athlete to bring home a provincial track and field medal.
The junior athlete placed first in pole vault for a second straight year and finished in sixth place for both 80 metre hurdles and long jump.
“She also went for the junior girls pole vault record at 3.15m, but she came up just millimeters short, barely knocking off the bar,” noted Symon. “Many other NDHS athletes finished with top-10 results and again came out with personal best performances in their events.”
Symon attributed the skill development of many of the athletes to Yellowjackets track and field coach Larry Godziuk.
