At about 10 a.m. on Jan. 7, approximately 100 cubic metres of a mixture of oil and water leaked from a pressurized pipe on Cenovus' Foster Creek site, located on the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range.

The affected pipe sprayed a mixture of about 70 per cent water and 30 per cent oil onto an area measuring approximately 30 metres by 160 metres within the site's primary oil treatment area of the plant, according to Brett Harris, Cenovus media relation senior advisor.

Harris said no one was injured and the leak was completely contained within a small area of Cenovus' property. At no time was there any risk to the general public. The plant was restarted by midday.

According to Darin Barter, spokesperson for the Environmental Resources Conservation Board, the leak was reported immediately and Cenovus and its employees followed the proper protocol.

Harris said, as of Jan. 10 approximately 90 per cent of the cleanup had been completed.
