Just before noon today, Bonnyville RCMP contacted Glendon School asking they initiate a lockdown due to an ongoing situation in the community.

A few hours later, at approximately 2 p.m., the lockdown, which had been switched to a hold and secure, was lifted.

“We locked all of the doors to the school, secured the students in their classrooms and took steps to make sure that students that were off the property or outside of the school were safe, so either we brought them into the school or there were calls from a couple of parents where kids were at home and we just asked them to keep those kids at home,” detailed Nicole Garner, director of communications for Northern Lights Public Schools (NLPS).

After further discussion with police, they changed it from a lockdown to a hold and secure.

"They weren't in a lockdown for very long," expressed Garner. "The difference between (a hold and secure) and a lockdown, is that in a hold and secure, the doors are still locked and access is restricted, but inside of the school, things continue like they normally would."

She added, "They don't go outside for recess, and if they were going to have gym outside it's inside... and all of the doors are locked, but they do allow people to go in and out of the front door, but that's monitored by the staff."

Just before 2 p.m. the school was advised by RCMP that the hold and secure was lifted and the incident had been resolved.

Garner confirmed no students were harmed, and they did "so well" during the lockdown.

"They were very cooperative with staff and they followed all of the directions given to them," said Garner. "The conduct of our students and staff in this situation was really good."

The Nouvelle has reached out to the RCMP requesting further details of the incident and will provide an update once it becomes available.
