The Bonnyville swimming pool is scheduled to be closed down for two months in the summer in order for crews to re-grout the tiles that line the pool.
In order to operate properly and hold water efficiently the pool needs to be re-grouted every 15 years, according to Bill Rogers, assistant CAO for the Town of Bonnyville.
Town administration received price quotes from JAC Inc. in Edmonton and Ashley Fine Flooring in Bonnyville.
JAC Inc. estimated the project to cost $43,422 and were able to commit to locking in that price through the completion of the project.
Ashley Fine Flooring estimated a cost of $46,307, but the fact they get supplies from the U.S combined with the low Canadian dollar, prohibited them from being able to guarantee that price doesn't change.
The two offers provided a slight dilemma for those on council.
“There is a $3,000 difference and we have a local business. I am wondering whether or not it is prudent to sort of look after our own,” said Mayor Gene Sobolewksi, leaning towards awarded the tender to Ashley Fine Flooring.
Coun. John Irwin agreed with Sobolewksi, noting that he has never had an issue with the local company.
“Out of town contractors don't come back to look at deficiencies. They get their money and they are out,” said Irwin.
Other councillors weren't able to be swayed, feeling that the difference the Canadian dollar could make to the price from Ashley Fine Flooring was too much of a risk to take.
In the end, JAC Inc. of Edmonton was awarded the pool re-grouting project. Sobolewksi and Irwin voted against the motion.
An extended shutdown time of eight weeks is expected to complete the project, with Rogers anticipating that to happen in July and August.
