Lightning struck and knocked a powerline to the ground, affecting 1,500 local residences and businesses after a storm ripped through town Friday.

The line, located behind Home Hardware, operated the Bonnyville substation, explained Brian Roy, ATCO Electric's district manager for Bonnyville. ATCO received a report of the downed line at 9 a.m. and power was back on at 1:15 p.m., he added.

"Our crews went out and worked quickly and safely as they could."

There were no injuries or damage as a result of the fallen powerline, Roy added.

During storms, situations such as these are unavoidable, he said.

"This is Mother Nature at her best."
