BONNYVILLE – The Bonnyville Municipal Library hosted Heather Buerfeind, with the Alberta Science Network, for a science experiment demonstration teaching about combustion, gravity, pH, and more.
Children and adults came to enjoy the demonstration on July 15, and lots of laughter and amazement ensued.
The Summer Science Fun event is coordinated by Northern Lights Library System. The organization has hired Buerfeind on as a summer presenter where she will travel around to the different libraries, spreading the joy of science.
The children in attendance eagerly volunteered to participate in the experiments, asked a slew of questions, and expressed their amazement as they watched Buerfeind.
The audience laughed as a child watched in disbelief during one of Buerfeind’s experiments where she was able to submerge a sparkler underwater several times while it remained lit.
“I’ve never been so confused in my life!” exclaimed the child.
With an education in the sciences, and a minor in drama, Buerfeind has found her calling in informal education where she can present the engaging science demonstrations.
“I absolutely love it . . . After I finished university, I started working at the Science Centre in Edmonton, doing stage shows and I really enjoyed it. My backgrounds in science and drama kind of came together and it became a lot of fun. Some of the experiments I’ve done today come from the stage shows that I did,” said Buerfeind.
She said the Alberta Science Network is a company that offers science demonstrations in order to promote a passion for science.
According to the Alberta Science Network, they “bring science to life for kids through hands-on activities and provide educators with tools and resources to get kids excited about science.”
