Three people were struck by lightning at a campsite at Pelican Point campground at Moose Lake on July 31 at about 11 p.m., according to the MD of Bonnyville's department of parks and recreation.

Al Mercier, who was at the site at the time of the incident, said the people hit were friends of the family, visiting from Edmonton.

“Thunderstorm hit, lightning hit, and it hit three of our members,” he explained. “It happened so fast.”

He said after lightning struck, several people were taken to the hospital in Bonnyville and have since been released.

“It hits, and it hits real fast,” he said. “I don't know how to explain it. They're doing OK right now, but as far as the outcome later on, who knows? Later on, down the line, a year from now, who knows.”

Brad Ollen, parks foreman for the MD of Bonnyville, said, “It's the first time I've heard of a lightning strike in my time here, but it's just one of those freak accidents of nature.”
