Time-served for possessing meth

BONNYVILLE - Lakeesha Rain Badger was sentenced to one-day in jail after pleading guilty to possession of methamphetamine.

She appeared in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse via CCTV from the Fort Saskatchewan Corrections Centre on Tuesday, where she pleaded guilty to possessing meth.

On Nov. 29, 2019, RCMP were called by Badger's grandfather requesting they remove her from his residence. According to the complainant, she was intoxicated and needed to leave the home.

Terry Mazerolle, Crown prosecutor, explained to the court that at the time of the offence, Badger was wanted on warrants out of St. Paul, so officers attended and arrested the accused.

During a search of her personal items, police found a small amount of methamphetamine hidden in her bra.

Although she has a previous criminal record, Mazerolle said, there were no drug-related offences until now.

"She could be treated as a first-time offender," he noted.

Badger has been in custody since Dec. 18, 2019 said acting duty counsellor Hart Spencer, for a total of 21 days.

Honourable Judge Ivan Ladouceur agreed with the joint submission for one-day in prison, and wished the 24-year-old the best of luck getting help with her addictions.
