Two Town of Bonnyville employees are being recognized for their quick thinking after discovering the fire in the SunLife Financial building on 50 Ave.

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, public works employees Larry Resch and Rondan Leepart were on their way from one job to the next, when they noticed something was wrong.

Heading east on 50 Ave. the pair saw smoke coming from the back of the building and decided to investigate. Quickly judging the severity of the situation, they immediately took action.

“Approaching the building from the south, Rondan called 911 while Larry began to alert the occupants of the building. Next the team went to the upstairs apartment and ensured two occupants were evacuated,” explained Bonnyville Mayor Gene Sobolewski.

Upon discovering an apartment with an occupant trapped inside, Resch used his experience as a volunteer firefighter to help the occupant reach safety.

“The team went to the rear addition where they found heavy black smoke and heat emitting from the door of an apartment. With the smoke layer only three feet above the floor, Larry was able to see the occupant, and drag him to safety,” detailed Sobolewski.

The town took the time to recognize the actions of the two men during their regular council meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 22. Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority Chief Brian McEvoy was also on hand to help present the awards.

Citing their bravery and fast actions, Sobolewski extended thanks from the town in the form of two commemorative plaques.

“On behalf of the Town of Bonnyville and all of its residents, I hereby commend the courageous efforts of both Larry and Rondan. They were instrumental in saving lives that day, and I am so very proud of the actions they took,” said Sobolewski.

Humbled by the recognition, the pair explained they were just doing what they felt was right in an emergency.

“We did what we felt any good citizen would or should do. We really didn't expect, or even want this, but at the same time we're very honoured and flattered,” expressed Resch.

No stranger to the situation, Resch had spent 10 years prior in a volunteer firefighting position. Using his previous training and assessing the situation, he entered the apartment without hesitation.

Despite being forced to make a split second decision, Resch was confident in his ability to get himself, the occupant, and the occupant's important belongings to safety.

“I didn't just go in guns blazing, I assessed the situation and believed I could get him, his stuff and myself to safety. I don't want to take too much credit here though, the real rock stars are the professionals.”
