Village expresses drainage concerns to MD

The MD of Bonnyville and Village of Glendon will be working together towards a common goal: solving the small community’s flooding issues.
The Village of Glendon council met for their regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 11.
The Village of Glendon has expressed their concerns with water flooding from the MD.

The MD of Bonnyville and Village of Glendon will be working together towards a common goal: solving the small community’s flooding issues.

According to Glendon CAO Melody Kwiatkowski for the past few years the village has experienced flooding problems as a direct result of water coming from the MD of Bonnyville.

“Due to changes to the land and changes that have been made over the years, it’s been getting progressively worse,” she stated.

As a result, Glendon reached out to the MD through a letter explaining the issue and their need for help.

“We want to get together with the MD and have a look and see if there’s something that we can do that will be neutrally beneficial for both the MD and the village,” detailed Kwiatkowski.

The water is draining from MD lands to the south of Glendon. Over the years, the water has caused flooding to properties in low areas, yards along the drainage route, and even the Glendon School playground.

“There’s been a few yards that we’ve been having to pump out in the spring just to ensure the houses don’t flood,” Kwiatkowski described, adding a big portion of the water is pooling at the back of the school yard, which has become a safety concern.

“It’s a drowning safety issue for children… They really have to watch them in the springtime and it’s time that they do something about it,” she continued.

During their meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 11, MD council agreed to look into the problem.

CAO Luc Mercier said, “My estimation is we won’t be spending a lot of money initially, we will just do some precursory looks at this… to come up with an initial plan.”
