Bonnyville Voyageurs offensive lineman Navarone Watchmaker has been chosen to represent western Canada at the International Bowl.

A strong performance at the Football Canada U16 Western Challenge in Lethbridge from July 1-8 helped secure Watchmaker a spot on the Western Canada U16 All-Stars. They'll travel to Texas in January 2018 to take on Team USA.

“I've been to many camps that have made me a better player. Going to the bantam bowl made me a better player, that's how I was selected for Team Canada. I feel like this experience is no different, it's going to help me get better,” said Watchmaker.

It promises to be a trip of firsts for the young Voyageur, who will put his skills to the test against an increased level of competition.

Everything from preparing to play south of the border, to meeting his new team represents a learning opportunity. Voyageurs head coach Larry Godziuk expects the trip to have a positive impact on Watchmaker in many ways.

“He gets to play against the best U16 players in the United States, and with the best U16 players in western Canada. It can't be anything but a learning experience. He'll learn to travel, and work with new coaches and teammates, it can only benefit him,” said Godziuk.

The Voyageurs are also likely to benefit from the experience Watchmaker gains. He plans to share everything he learns with his current teammates.

While he prepares for the international games, he'll to establish himself further as a leader on the Bonnyville squad.

“With this I can help my fellow linemen. If they have any questions they can come to me, and I can show them new skills I learn. If they need something, they can talk to me,” explained Watchmaker.

As for the game itself, he's taking the same approach as his head coach. Instead of stressing out over the result, he intends to enjoy the process.

Win or lose, Watchmaker is grateful for the opportunity to build his resume while representing his country.

“It's going to help build my profile as a football player, and open up the pathway to college or university. Ultimately my goal is to have fun, and make as many friends as I can. It doesn't matter if we win, I'm on Team Canada, that's a great accomplishment,” expressed Watchmaker.

In the future, Watchmaker hopes to continue his football career as a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. While he'll have to wait a little while to dawn the green and gold, being selected for team Canada will more than suffice for now.

“This is something I take to heart, it's very special to me. It'll be something I can pass down to future generations. I'll be able to tell my kids I did something special in my life by playing football,” said Watchmaker.
