BONNYVILLE – A local resident walked in on a break-in happening at a local motel on March 1.

“A complainant called to report that the South View Motel was being broken into by three suspects,” said Bonnyville RCMP Sgt. Kim Hillier. “The complainant had spooked them and the suspects dropped the items and took off. Members continue to investigate this incident and have identified one of the suspects.”

Disruptive customer charged by police

A local bank called the RCMP on March 2 about a male patron who was being extremely disruptive and was yelling and screaming at bank staff.

Officers attended and arrested 57-year-old Everett Clarke for mischief and uttering threats to an employee. The accused was brought before a justice of the peace and released on a $2,000 promise to pay.

Business target of attempted theft

An employee at Tercier Motors reported an attempted theft of a catalytic converter on Feb. 26.

“From the surveillance video, it appears that the suspect was not capable of cutting the converter off during the first try and returned again the night after to try,” said Hillier. “Again, the suspect was unsuccessful, however, significant damage was caused during the attempts.”

The RCMP continue to investigate.

Police Dog Unit called in to help find suspect

A 911 call came in for a break and enter at Big Time Towing on March 3. The suspect was last seen at the Sportsman Trailers.

Members patrolled the area, and the Police Dog Services (PDS) Unit was involved but were unable to locate a suspect. Video surveillance was taken from the business and the investigation is ongoing, according to RCMP.

Impaired drivers keep RCMP busy

Bonnyville RCMP laid a number of impaired driving charges last week.

A pro-active traffic stop on Feb. 26 saw a 31-year-old male from Bonnyville fail a roadside test. “He was subject to current provincial sanctions, including having his vehicle seized for 30 days, a $1,000 fine, and an immediate 90-day license suspension,” Hillier said.

An RCMP member initiated a traffic stop with a vehicle that had no lights on, during a focused patrol on Feb. 28.

The driver didn’t have her driver's license and failed a mandatory alcohol screening test. The 19-year-old driver was also subject to the current provincial sanctions including a 30-day vehicle seizure, a $1,000 fine, and a 90-day license suspension.

On March 2, the local detachment received a report of a possible impaired driver who was taking a nap at the McDonald’s drive-thru in town.

“Members attended the location, and located the suspect’s vehicle. An approved roadside screening device was utilized to determine that the subject of the complaint was indeed intoxicated,” Hillier explained. “The 54-year-old male from Kelowna . . . was immediately subject to the current provincial sanctions. He was given a fine of $1,000, a 30-day vehicle seizure, and a 90-day license suspension.”

Vehicle broken into overnight

Police are looking into a report received on March 1 regarding a vehicle that was stolen overnight.

“The complainant believed one of two possible suspects had taken the keys from her residence as they were visiting the night before. Members have continued to investigate this occurrence and have identified the possible suspects,” Hillier said.
