COLD LAKE - The Cold Lake community embraced the wintry weather as people came together for the first Coldest Night of the Year event hosted by the Cold Lake Food Bank on Feb. 24.
Beyond uniting individuals, this event also met 90 per cent of its goal, raising $18,525, just shy of the $20,000 target.
On the evening of Feb. 24, 144 walkers, 29 teams, and 39 volunteers joined forces to walk either a 2 km or 5 km route, all supporting the food bank.
Judy Truhn, a volunteer at the Coldest Walk event, expressed her gratitude and highlighted the importance of having the food bank in the community.
“I think there are a lot of families that are struggling right now, and the food bank is just a blessing,” Truhn said. “The people coming out today are definitely concerned about what’s happening in our community.”
The event drew a diverse crowd of participants, including teams, families, and individuals, all bundled up to brave the cold for a good cause. Food Bank Executive Director Nic Caron-Lavoie welcomed the attendees and expressed appreciation for the community's support.
“I’d like to thank you all for joining us today,” Caron-Lavoie said. “It’s incredible to witness this spirited community as teams, families, and individuals have come together tonight.”
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the fundraising total. Caron-Lavoie shared the exciting news with the crowd.
“Today our collective efforts have raised an impressive $18,525 for the food bank. That is amazing.”
The funds raised will play a crucial role in supporting the Cold Lake food bank's mission to assist those in need within the community.
The donation portal on the Coldest Night of the Year’s website will remain accessible until March 31, offering an extended opportunity for individuals to contribute and assist the Cold Lake food bank in reaching its goal.
