Over $3,000 was raised by a group of women in the Cold Lake area. Funds are used to create feminine hygiene kits for women and girls across the world.

COLD LAKE - On Nov. 30, a group of women at the Bonnyville Baptist church got together to raise money for Days for Girls, a non-profit organization that helps women and girls around the world access feminine hygiene products.

Larissa De Freitas, co-lead, was inspired to get involved with the international group in 2014 after she went to an Edmonton Expo and learned about the organization. She co-leads the group locally with Claudette Popowich. Now, there are 40 women involved within the Lakeland area.

Some of the women meet in person to make kits, while others work from home. During the last Thursday of November, they held the Annual Ladies Christmas in November event to sell items, with all the proceeds going toward making the kits. They sold handmade gifts such as quilts, baked goods and jewelry.

By the end of the night, they made $3,019, which will help them make kits for 150 women. Each kit costs about $20 to make and includes a variety of items. The kits are distributed through the Red Cross and Compassion Canada.
