Polar Cup draws 20 teams to Cold Lake

On March 9, the U7 Polar Cup Hockey Tournament was held at the Cold Lake Energy Centre.

COLD LAKE - On March 9, the U7 Polar Cup Hockey Tournament was held at the Cold Lake Energy Centre.

There were 20 teams total playing, with six from the Cold Lake area. One team came as far away as Lloydminster. The players were seven years old and under.

Rob Shields, director of U7, stated the annual event is organized for the kids to have fun.

"We hope the kids have a blast," he said. "There is no winning or losing at this event. We just want the kids to come out and enjoy hockey. We also play drills and tag. We want the kids to learn to love it on the ice."

The event was also an opportunity for fundraising to support the local hockey program. There was a silent auction, 50/50 draws and a vendor market of 25 tables.

The U7 program runs from September to the end of March each year.
