Unseasonable weather means open water in December

Unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of snow have some lakes in the region looking more spring-like than winter.

COLD LAKE - Unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of snow have some lakes in the region looking more spring-like than winter.

Cold Lake freelancer Tanya Boudreau snapped a few pictures in the Cold Lake Marina area on Dec. 28, showing plenty of open water, and some waterfowl enjoying a morning swing.

Emergency services across the province are urging people to use caution when going near bodies of water.

The Alberta RCMP remind all Albertans and outdoor enthusiasts of the dangers of unpredictable thin ice and open water. Ice should be at least 15 cm thick for a person to walk or skate on, 20 cm for a group of people, and 25 cm for snowmobiles or off highway vehicles.
