COLD LAKE - Owner and Operator Raymond Cowell took to the podium at Cold Lake City Hall to advocate for the continuation of Wicked Water Sports' operations on Kinosoo Beach and at the Cold Lake Marina.
Cowell presented council with a case for extending the business’ tenure to a five-year agreement in the community.
During the March 12 regular council meeting, Cowell recounted the evolution of Wicked Water Sports, from its modest beginnings as a small beach trailer to a full-fledged water sports rental service, providing an array of activities for both Cold Lake residents and tourists.
Cowell spoke about the company's growth and its significant contributions to the local tourism scene.
“Several years later we added our first boat rental at the Cold Lake Marina and last year added a second vessel to our inventory. Currently, we are the only boat rental establishment here in Cold Lake," he stated.
Highlighting the company's recognition and success, Cowell shared, "We were featured on the website To Do Canada, as a fun and exciting thing to do here in the Lakeland."
In addition to business achievements, Cowell spoke passionately about Wicked Water Sports' commitment to community service and safety.
“We have provided a form of safety and security on Kinosoo Beach and have even helped find missing children and even rescued a dog in the water who had swam far out chasing birds using our Sea-Doo," he told council.
Cowell then pivoted to the broader impact of Wicked Water Sports on the Cold Lake community. He listed the numerous organizations and events they've supported, underscoring their role as ambassadors of Cold Lake.
Concluding his delegation, Cowell made a heartfelt request to the council.
“It's for these reasons, I want to humbly ask City council, that because of these achievements, that I continue to operate on Kinosoo Beach and on Cold Lake Marina, but be granted a five-year agreement," he stated earnestly. He outlined plans for future expansion and collaboration with local clubs and businesses, envisioning a vibrant future for Wicked Water Sports and the community.
According to information from the City of Cold Lake, Wicked Water Sports Rentals must seek annual approval for operations at Kinosoo Beach. This approval is contingent upon compliance with the City of Cold Lake's Business License Bylaw, necessitating the purchase of a suitable business license.
In accordance with the City of Cold Lake's Mobile Vendor Policy, Wicked Water Sports Rentals is also required to obtain a Mobile Vendor Permit.
Ultimately, the decision to grant permission for Wicked Water Sports Rentals to operate on the beach rests with the City of Cold Lake, given that the beach is municipal property.
Council did not make a decision regarding the request but will do so at a future meeting.
