ELK POINT – A new electronic system will help staff at the Elk Point Healthcare Centre keep patients safe, specifically those with memory-related conditions, like Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia.

Patients will wear new wristbands or pendants as part of the new system.

"The WanderGuard system will alert staff in the event a memory care patient wanders away from their designated unit or care area," according to information from Alberta Health Services (AHS). Wandering is not uncommon for patients with memory-related conditions.

The new wristbands and pendants will ping staff if a memory care patient wanders off, allowing staff to bring patients back to safety.

A $12,000 donation from CNRL and a $5,000 donation from Enbridge will allow for the purchase of the system. The system is expected to be purchased and rolled out in the next few weeks.

"The WanderGuard system will be installed in acute care and the emergency department, as well as at various entryways, including the main entrance," according to information from AHS.

Brenda-Anne Haire Killam, integrated site manager at the Elk Point Healthcare Centre, said the system will enhance safety of memory care patients, "while preserving their dignity and independence."
