VERMILION - Over $1 million worth of damage was caused by vandalism in Vermilion on July 6, including damage to six sheriff's vehicles that were parked at the Vermilion Provincial Building, and extensive damage to the provincial building.
RCMP received a complaint on Sunday regarding damage done to the building, several vehicles, and also the McDonald's restaurant.
"RCMP members arrived on scene and noted that a significant number of windows were smashed on and in the Vermilion Courthouse, Public Health windows as well as the sheriff’s vehicles," according to information from RCMP.
Additionally, the suspect had caused additional damage to the Children’s Rehab Service interior and exterior had extensive damage.
A suspect was identified, located and arrested by RCMP.
"I wanted to start by sending a special thank you to the two youths who reported the incident and stayed on scene in order to give their witness statement,” said Cpl. Brittany Pegg of the Vermilion RCMP. “This perfectly highlights how community vigilance, combined with the efficiency of your Vermilion RCMP, effective partnerships and assistance from other RCMP detachments and specialized units, can allow us to keep Vermilion safe, together.
According to information from RCMP, it was discovered that the suspect had also caused damage to the McDonald’s in Vermilion.
"The initial estimate of the damages done to the courthouse and vehicles is set at upwards of $1 million, while the damage to McDonald's is estimated at around $50,000.
As a result of the investigation, Steven Bodurka, 23, a resident of Vermilion, was charged with mischief to vehicles over $5,000 (x6), mischief over $5,000 (x2); and break and enter to commit mischief over $5,000.
Bodurka was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. He was to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion on July 8.
