VERMILION - An investigation into the alleged theft of fuel from a rural property resulted in a 24-year-old man from the County of Vermilion River being charged by RCMP.

On Dec. 31, Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of theft of fuel from a rural property south of Innisfree.

"Witnesses observed the suspect using a unique vehicle during the theft. Information was obtained suggesting that the same unique vehicle had attended a gas station in Innisfree," according to information from RCMP.

Police attended the gas station and reviewed video surveillance and confirmed that it was the same vehicle used in the theft and that it had been reported stolen out of Lloydminster.

“In this case, a high-quality CCTV system was able to assist investigators in identifying the suspect," according to Sgt. Corey Buckingham of Vermilion RCMP.

As a result of the investigation, Christian Ruston was charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and failing to comply with a release order.

"Ruston was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody and is to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lloydminster on Jan. 9," according  to police.
