UPDATE: The POST has learned that the child who was airlifted died after several days in hospital.

A two-year-old child has been airlifted from the north side of Lac La Biche Lake to hospital in Edmonton after a swing accident caused the child to stop breathing.

According to Lac La Biche County fire services manager John Kokotilo, the child had been playing on a swing this afternoon when the child's clothing became hooked onto the swing, causing the child to choke.

The child was not breathing when rescue crews arrived, but they were able to insert a breathing tube and get the child breathing again.

The child was taken to hospital in Edmonton via STARS air ambulance at approximately 3:30 pm for extra attention and treatment. Kokotilo said the child was in stable condition prior to boarding the air ambulance.

The incident occurred at a residence off of Range Road 142, off of Highway 858 north of Lac La Biche Lake. The STARS air ambulance landed and took off from the intersection of Highway 858 and Range Road 142, and traffic on Highway 858 was blocked for approximately one hour.
